Google Releases “Google Earth” – 3D Earth Browser

Google Earth – Home

Remember Keyhole, the cool 3D app you could browse incredibly detailed aerial photos in, giving you a feeling of flight and quasi-omnipotence? Google bought them last year. And now you can get the Google Earth experience for free.

I’m downloading now, and I’ll post more thoughts once I’ve played with it for a bit. But if it’s anything like Keyhole, this is going to be the coolest “wow factor” application on your computer.

EDIT: Whoa. The animated Driving Directions just blew my mind. Choose Driving Directions, enter your origin and destination, get the route, then click on the “Play” button under the turn-by-turn directions, and watch as you’re flown along your route, in 3D, with the aerial photographs filling in as you go. Awesome!

I should have grabbed it last night. When I tried this morning, Google posted that they were having some techincal difficulties and were suspending the downloads temporarily.

  2. Hi All Experts,
Does anyone use google earth images as ground image planes for use in aerial scenes. I know how to stitch them together but are there any tools or tricks to make sure that the images are at the same height, angle and such to make sure they stitch well. I know in the pro version you can get bigger images but im not going to pay for the pro version when i could stitch multiple images together…
