Donate to the TinyScreenfuls Tip Jar

You may have noticed that I’ve added a button to donate to the TinyScreenfuls Tip Jar over in the sidebar. You can click on it, and send as much or little as you want via PayPal (which means you can use a credit card, etc.).

Your donations go to paying for site hosting, and new gadgets/devices for me to play with. Shameless begging? It’s not what you think. Read on.

I’ve been running advertisements (Google and Chitika) on the site for a while. No one has complained – in fact, most of my readers have said they don’t mind the ads at all. However, I’ve come to the opinion that when you accept money from advertisers, you owe them something, no matter how small. I don’t want to be beholden to advertisers. I want to listen only to my readers/listeners, and myself.

I don’t run this blog and podcast as a business, or for a profit. I do it because I love it, and I love to connect with other geeks like me that like it, too. But getting money from advertising or a tip jar allows me to keep doing it. First of all, it pays for hosting. Second, and perhaps more importantly, I’ve decided to keep all of my gadget spending out of our day-to-day family budget. So, in order to keep up with all of the cool new toys that come out, and to have something to talk about on this site, so it’s nice to receive some small form of income from TinyScreenfuls.com.

I will never charge for content, or restrict access to people who have donated. Donations to the tip jar are completely voluntary. This is an experiment to see how the “tip jar” model works out. I’ll be adding recurring automatic donations for a “Benefactor” program, soon.

Love the idea? Hate it? Tired of hearing me talk about it? As always, let me know what you think. Leave a comment or email me.

Earth to Josh: if you provide good content and stop being an attention whore, the site will pay for itself. It’s as simple as that.

Hey, I thought I just wanted to let you know that you have an awesome site. Will you please post more about your ipod?

  3. ”and stop being an attention whore”

Still, it’s better than been just a plain sleezy whore like you Samara :)

Just tell us all how the site pays for itself? Providing good content does not trigger some mystic portal where bandwidth is free now does it?

There are thousands of great websites and blogs like TinyScreenfuls out there that require reader donations to keep them going.

  4. Hey There Josh-

How is your tip jar working? I have tried a tip jar ona few of my sites but went back with google ads in the end it was esier and seemed to get more clicks.

Probably a good idea to keep cool tech gadgets out of the family budget! My weakness in terms of hte family budget is eating out or should I say pigging out!

Good luck with your tip jar
