Video: Entering Portland on the Fremont Bridge

You know how there’s a place when you’re driving back to your town after a trip when you just feel "this is home"? No? Maybe I’m the only one, but I love seeing Portland from this section of the Fremont bridge, coming from the north, on I-405. The bridge is beautiful, you can see forever in all directions, the river, etc.

I always love this video, so I shot a minute or so of video coming home from the airport on Saturday. I shot the video at 60 fps on my Canon SD700, but I transcoded the video the .MOV using iSquint, so I don’t know if it preserved the framerate.

Anyway, check out a glimpse of the town that I consider "home". :-)

What’s your favorite view/area of your favorite town?

  2. The Fremont Bridge is one of the most inspirational things that man has ever constructed, as far as I’m concerned.

Right now, though I aspire to be a designer, right now I plug away at an absolute drudge job in NW. My route in from Baja Gresham always takes me from I-84 westbound to I-5 northbound, thence to the ramp to the Fremont.

While I wouldn’t dream of contradicting your observation, may I be so impertinent to say that if you work at a depressing “day” job, coming over that lofty ramp in the middle of the night with all the lights of the city on and gliding into a place hurtling over that bridge reminds you that Portland is, indeed, a beautiful place, if a city can be thought of as beautiful.

  3. I remember when I went to New York City for the first time, and coming from JFK it seemed less than awesome, leaving me thinking “hell, I flew 9 hours for this”. A few minutes later, the Manhattan skyline appeared and I then fell in love with the place, so much that I plan to move (yay for intercontinental relocation) there in 2 years.

  4. That view of Portland is my favorite, as well.

The view of downtown Chicago driving north on the Dan Ryan Expressway is very impressive, as well. Especially when you’re just to the southwest.
