Wanted: 2 new Asus R2H UMPCs from a reputable seller

Update: I managed to track some down at ProPortable.com – they had 10 in stock as of this morning (8 now!). Thanks to Blowfish for the recommendation, and Sean at ProPortables for answering my questions. Now, the waiting (the hardest part)! :-)

It has nothing to do with Intel, but I need to track down and buy two Asus R2H Ultra Mobile PCs soon. They’re relatively new from the manufacturer, so they haven’t really shown up in huge numbers in the “channel” yet.

NewEgg.com had them listed with an availability date of today, 11/6, but has since changed their status to “Out of Stock” (and they called me to tell me to stop clicking “Refresh” every 15 minutes all day today ;-)). All of the other major retailers I’ve looked at (Buy.com, etc.) don’t have them in stock, either.

There are places that I’ve never heard of, like DataViz, PCSuperDeals, etc. that claim to have them in stock, but on something this big, I’d rather go with a seller I’ve dealt with before, or one that comes highly recommended. I’ve been burned by shady online retailers before, and since these UMPCs aren’t (directly) for me, I want to make sure to get them from a good place.

So, if you can provide me a pointer to a recommended reseller who has two new Asus R2H UMPCs in stock, I’ll buy them. Or, if you can vouch for one of the places that claims to have them, that would work, too. Drop a comment or email me.

Thanks! :-)

  1. Blowfish says:

Check out http://www.ProPortable.com. He’s a Fujitsu dealer, and seems to be pretty active at the TabletPCReview.com forums (UMPC subforum). He even posted some naked photos of the R2H. There’s also a thread there on his inventory status of R2H’s. Good luck!

  2. Thanks – I saw ProPortables posts (Justin, I think it was?) He said that their supply is still trickling in, and that after filling backorders, they won’t have enough to ship new orders until after Thanksgiving. But I’ll definitely keep an eye out with them.

Thanks for thinking of me! :-)

Hey, Josh, are you going to be able to get your hands on one of those for testing and give us a report before you turn them over to someone else?

  4. I don’t know what that is, so that would be a no. :-)

It’s for my brother’s company in Seattle. He has a moving company, and I pretty much do all of his IT support. There’s some Tablet PC software he wants to try for his salesmen (doing estimates, etc.), and he’s interested in using UMPCs to do it.

Of course, as his IT guy, I need one on hand, to be able to support them, so I’m going to get them both configured identically, then send one up to him for his sales staff. We’ll see how it goes, and you can bet I’ll be blogging the whole way.

But right now, I’m like a kid on Christmas Eve – FedEx should be here tomorrow! :-)
