On Top of Shanghai – View from the Tallest Hotel in the World

I shot 350 plus photos this afternoon and evening, walking around Shanghai and the Huangpu riverfront. And I’ll put all of the good ones on Flickr, eventually, but I just HAD to share this one immediately:

Shanghai from the Cloud 9 Bar, 87th Floor of the Hyatt

Click it to view the photo on Flickr, then check out some of the larger sizes. I snapped this about an hour ago from the bar on the 87th floor of the Shanghai Hyatt, the “tallest hotel in the world”. It occupies the 50th through 87th floors of the building that houses the Shanghai stock exchange. And the view is astounding.

Thanks to Kelly, Tammy, and Jay, who I ran into on my way back to my room, for “shanghai’ing” me into going back out with them. The view alone would have been SO worth it, but the company and conversation were great, too. :-)

  1. Dude, is it my imagination, or are the Bund building lights not on?

It’s a good view, I actually prefer the view from the other side of the Huangpu River. For example, the entire “Aurora” building is a giant TV set as well as the building next to it.

I do like the way the River curves around that spit of Pudong land. You can really see this at the highest sphere of the Oriental Pearl TV tower. Definitely worth the 100 RMB to go to the top, IMHO.

I have an odd memory of that restaurant at the top of the Hyatt. It involves a case of mistaken ordering and a really expensive fish. :-)

  2. Heh. I think you’re right – the Bund isn’t lit up. It was in the other photos I took earlier. This was taken at about 10 PM. By the time we got back to our hotel, they had turned off the lights on the Oriental Pearl Tower, too.

I was wondering if you could go up in the OPT – nice to know you can. I might spend the 100 RMB for that! :-)

  3. Nice shot . . . Looks like you actually got a bit of vaguely clear air for the evening. Hope you’re enjoying my hemisphere!

  5. @Durf yeah, it was a pretty clear evening. Started raining on our way back to our own hotel. It’s been pretty cloudy/hazy here, part due to actual weather, and part due to pollution, I’m sure. But I did see some blue skies yesterday! :-) I’m definitely enjoying the East. Would love to come to Japan some day!

Hi, it’s me, your long-distance romance in Oregon. Love the view in that photo! I think if I was there in person I might have got a little queezy up there, so I’m enjoying the photo instead.
