Josh’s Lifelog for 2008-09-09

  • I’m just not very excited about today’s Apple event. If it’s just new iPods, meh. Would be happy to be surprised by more, though! :-) #
  • @eriksr Ooh – bluetooth (and maybe a camera?) for the Touch would be cool. :-) #
  • @influxx I missed Terminator last night, need to obtain it and watch it. I’m on Spoiler Watch until I see it! 😉 #
  • @jenvteal Yes, spammers will follow you on Twitter. But they can’t spam you unless you folow them back. You can block them or ignore them. #
  • @jenvteal I say just follow people you know (IRL or not), and ignore unknowns who follow you. You can block them, but that gets old fast! #
  • Showing @mungara some Twhirl alternatives, and saw that TweetDeck updated itself. It now seems to see ALL of my followees, so I can group! #
  • @RevTim I intend to use Ars for live Apple event coverage: http://tinyurl.com/5w5n9n. Maybe macrumorslive.com, too. #
  • @mar_iannitti When you write a tweet in reply to someone, you should put “@theirusername” at the beginning, so we know who you’re talking to #
  • Tweetdeck is STILL not showing me my complete followees list when making a group. *sigh* Useless! :-( #
  • Getting ready for the Apple event, watching various live coverage (Ars, etc.). No MacRumorsLive this time. Will Twitter stay up? #
  • @ashokraj No, I only have 500+ followees. Which is still probably breaking TweetDeck. :-) They need to test for edge cases like me! #
  • @raines It would be nice, but I’m not counting on Twitter staying up during the event. 😉 #
  • @iaindodsworth I don’t know how many people I’m missing, because it doesn’t show me a count. I just notice people should be there aren’t. #
  • Steve Jobs (on the AP obit): “Reports of my death are greatly exaggerated.” LOL :-) #
  • NBC is coming back to iTunes. In HD. And you can watch on your computer (not just on Apple TV, like movies). #
  • HD TV shows cost 50% more – $2.99 vs $1.99 for standard def. Boo! :-( #
  • The new Genius auto-playlists in iTunes sounds pretty cool. #
  • The auto-refresh at live.gizmodo.com is really cool. Nice not to have to hammer on Cmd+R/F5. :-) #
  • @funkatron Yeah, but do you really want a web where you pay by the pixel? #
  • iTunes 8 available today as a free download. But the site isn’t updated yet. #
  • iPod Classic: 80GB being bumped to 120GB, 160GB being discontinued. So only one iPod Classic now. Get those big 160s while you still can! #
  • And the new iPod Nano is… exactly what the leaked photos said it would be. :-) #
  • The new nano is the same height and width as the 2G tall Nano, with bigger screen. And thinner, rounded. #
  • The new nano has curved glass, improved UI, and an accelerometer (wha?!) #
  • Nano accelerometer lets you auto-rotate the screen from portrait to landscape, just like the iPhone/Touch. New UI looks snazzy, iPhone-ish. #
  • Shake to shuffle – now THAT is a cool feature. Hope it comes to iPhone. Though didn’t they steal that from Sony Ericcson Walkman phones? #
  • So give us price and capacity on the new Nano, already! #
  • OK! $149 for 8GB, $199 for 16GB. Blue, purple, orange, green, pink (iPod mini colors!). They’re going to sell a gajillion of these. :-) #
  • New accessories: armband, play/volume controls, mic for voice recording. And new high end buds with 3 tips, 2 drivers. #
  • The new high end buds are $79. If they’re as comfortable and sound better than my $25 Sony EX51s, I might switch. #
  • New iPod Touch! It’s thinner (!), steel finish, now has a volume control and a speaker. Sweet! #
  • The new iPod Touch gets the Genius playlist feature, too, which means it’s certainly coming via software update to older ones/iPhones. #
  • And the new iPod Touch has Nike+ built in. #
  • Wow. Those Need for Speed iPhone/Touch screens are gorgeous. Hope it plays well – I’ll buy it! :-) #
  • The new mic-enabled earbuds work with the iPod Touch. That means that VoIP on the Touch is now a reality. Awesome! :-) #
  • iPhone 2.1 software coming Friday. “lots of bug fixes”, significantly improved battery life, assume all the Genius playlist stuff, too. #
  • @faithfulgeek The new earbuds? I don’t know. That’s a really good question. I’m sure we’ll know soon. #
  • They never do “One More Thing…” at iPod events. They always end with some dumb musical act. Harumph. :-) #
  • Actually, now that I think about it, when is the last time Apple did a big “one more thing…” announcement? Seems like it’s been years. #
  • Impressed that Twitter (sorta) stayed up during today’s Apple event. Though I started getting Failwhale’s afterwards. #
  • @BrianEnigma I can’t tell from any of the nano photos (they don’t show the bottom), but I imagine it has the same Dock Connector. #
  • @kmlowry The failwhale is what Twitter shows when it’s “over capacity” or otherwise down. Rarer these days. Has a cult following. :-) #
  • @kmlowry See http://failwhale.com/ #
  • @jezlyn Thanks for the reminder. I need to snag Anathem on my Kindle. I’m re-reading Snow Crash, coincidentally. :-) #
  • Aaah! There’s going to be a new Lessig book (“Remix”) out in a month. I can’t keep up with these great books! :-O http://tinyurl.com/6g828z #
  • iTunes 8 is out! Downloading now… #
  • iTunes 8 for Mac OS X is a 55.9MB download, from http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/. Went really fast for me – it’s already done. #
  • iTunes 8 installed, but it complained that I don’t have Quicktime 7.5.5 yet, sent me to Software Update. It still launched, though. #
  • iTunes 8 first launch “Creating Artwork Thumbnails”… #
  • Turning on Genius in iTunes 8 requires an Apple account, walks through a wizard, like iPhone activation. #
  • Genius is chugging, “Gathering info about your library”. “Feel free to continue using iTunes.” #
  • Trying my first Genius playlist. What song should I pick? Hmm… How about… Weezer Pork and Beans? #
  • Genius Sidebar is useless. It’s nothing but “Here’s a bunch of related songs. Buy buy buy them on iTunes! Only $0.99!!1!” :-( #
  • HOWEVER, the Genius Button, that makes a “related” playlist from songs ALREADY in your Library, is REALLY cool. Already loving it. #
  • The new Grid view in iTunes 8 is also really cool. Try setting it to Genre, then mouse over the boxes. It’s like iPhone/iMovie “flipping”. #
  • Overall, liking iTunes 8. It’s not a major 7-to-8 upgrade, in my eyes, but still quite slick. Recommended. #
  • iTunes 8 was supposed to get a new visualizer, but I can’t tell if it’s any different (I rarely if ever use it). #
  • I can’t figure out how to hide the stupid Genius sidebar. Am I going to be forced to view ads for songs on the iTunes Store ALL THE TIME? :( #
  • Oh. That little button down in the corner, that looks like a “Play” triangle? It’s not. It’s “Show/Hide the Genius Sidebar.” Confusing. #
  • @LeStew If you paid the $10 for the 2.0 software update, 2.1 should be free for your Touch (at least, that’s what I understand). #
  • @amybarton Sorry to hear that! I’ve been saying that PowerPoint is bad for our brain cells for a while. Maybe someday we’ll get relief. :-) #
  • To reiterate: in iTunes 8, the Genius sidebar is worse than useless. It’s nothing but ads. But the Genius playlist button is made of awesome #
  • @LeStew But if you already paid $10 for 2.0, it’s free for you, right? Or am I missing something? #
  • Trying an iPhone sync under iTunes 8 for the first time. Wish me luck! :-) Will it be any faster, or do I have to wait for 2.1? #
  • @LeStew OK, cool. Wasn’t trying to call you out. Just trying to save you ten bucks. :-) #
  • @amybarton PowerPoint has it’s place. As a presentation tool. Not as a do-everything collaboration tool. :-) #
  • So much for faster iPhone syncing with just iTunes 8. *sigh* All hope now rests on 2.1 on Friday… #
  • iTunes 8 DOES have a new visualizer – Magnetosphere – it has an impressive geek pedigree: http://tinyurl.com/6pp5gk #
  • Hey, whaddya know? Updating iPhone apps (downloading new version updates) from inside iTunes works now! (It failed for me on previous vers.) #
  • I’m moving all of my “search feeds” that I’m subscribed to out into Netvibes dashboards (from Google Reader). We’ll see how it goes. #
  • Why is it that Flickr STILL doesn’t offer RSS feeds for search results (or multiple tags, by some other means? Pitiful. #
