  • Sharing innovation ideas in staff meeting. I don’t have any big ones this time, but I’m going to show off Instapaper and Posterous. #
  • @kegill You have to be a paid subscriber to Ars Technica to get access to the PDFs. I heart them, so I’ve been a subscriber since 2001. in reply to kegill #

  • OH: “Did you just ls -al your brain, out loud?” #
  • @portentint Is it even sadder that I wish I could run ls (and a variety of other *nix commands) on my brain, for real? :-) in reply to portentint #
  • It’s time for me to beg you to vote on my SXSW panel idea – live TV from your cube, and the story of @isntv: http://bit.ly/isntvsxsw #

  • iCal has an advanced option to “delete meetings older than 30 days”. Don’t check that box if you’re using Exchange. Ask me how I know. :-) #
  • @superchef I know. Posterous is creating duplicates, and I wish it would stop. I’ve been going in and deleting the dupes manually. in reply to superchef #
  • Took some cool photos of the moon from the Intel parking lot. Yes, at 9:30PM. Will share later. *yawn* #

The Moon and Jupiter Above the Trees

I was at work late last night, and the moon and clouds were just gorgeous when I came out into the empty parking lot. Jupiter (I think) was really bright, too, next to the moon. I snapped some shots, and this one came out pretty well. Shot on a Canon T1i, braced on a sign, everything auto, because I'm a photography poser. :-)

  • That Parallels 3 to 4 upgrade I left running overnight? Still at the same spot (50%) as when I left. Argh… #
  • @rachelbancroft Chocolate cake for breakfast? Man, I should have done that! What was I thinking? :-) in reply to rachelbancroft #
  • I think I might give up on this Parallels 4 XP upgrade, and just build a new VM under Snow Leopard. Hmm. Windows 7 tiem nao? :-) #
  • Here I go! Installing Snow Leopard, after giving up up my Parallels upgrade and building a new VM: http://twitpic.com/g3wgg #

  • I’m back after the Snow Leopard upgrade. Fiddling with the new settings. Glad to finally be here. :-) #
  • One happy Snow Leopard surprise: VASTLY improved proxy “auto detect” support. Safari and Firefox finally *JUST WORK* behind our proxy. Yay! #
  • Believe it or not, this is the first time I’ve really used Apple’s Mail.app. Now that it has Exchange support, I’m trying it as my primary. #
  • Does anyone know of a Mail.app plugin that moves the reading pane to the right (a la Outlook) AND works in Snow Leopard? #
  • It occurs to me that using the iPhone in space/zero gravity would be a total PITA. The accelerometer would go nuts. #
  • @r Oh, come on. Coverage in outer space can’t be *that* much worse than it is here on earth. *rimshot* :-) in reply to r #
  • Just reported a jam on . My mood: happy. http://bit.ly/LCvq0 #
  • Heads up: TV Hwy EB at Cornelius Pass Rd. Is CLOSED due to a BIG wreck. :-( #traffic #pdxtraffic #
  • TV Hwy in Beaverton is CLOSED from SW 198th to Cornelius Pass. HUGE wreck. Side streets are clogged. Anyone with web access have details? #
  • Apparently a crash knocked down a power pole at SW 209th and TV Hwy. I live less than a mile from there. *sigh* #
  • Wha huh? http://google.com is redirecting to http://google.cn for me. Did Verizon Fios give me a Chinese IP address or something? #
  • Just downloaded @siracusa’s epic 23 page Snow Leopard review as a PDF for later perusal (one of the benefits of being an Ars subscriber). #
  • BTW, the PDF of the Ars Snow Leopard review is actually *65* printed pages. I won’t put it on dead tress, but might xfer to Kindle to read. #
  • @kegill @siracusa’s Mac OS reviews for Ars are legendary, and worth reading every word. Have been for years. :-) in reply to kegill #
  • I’m told that big crash today at 209th/TV Hwy was a car that crashed into a telephone pole then *exploded*, taking out power in the area. #

One Reason I’m Posting More – I Finally Learned to Two Finger iPhone Type

I’ve been posting a lot more on my blog than I have in a long time. Part of the reason for it had been to try out Posterous (write once, email, publish in many places). But there’s a bigger underlying reason that at least deserves a mention.

After 2+ years, I finally made myself learn how to type with two fingers on my iPhone.

You all know how much I rely on my iPhone for everyday connected life. There’s a reason I call it my prosthetic brain. An when the iPhone first launched, Steve himself, foreseeing the complaints people would have about the lack if a physical keyboard, went to lengths to teach us how to get used to the iPhone’s on screen keys. Trust the software. Type full words or sentences. Start using one finger.

For whatever reason, I have always been an index finger iPhone typist. Having had a BlackBerry, I was familiar with the two thumb method, but every time I tried it on my iPhone, it was too error prone. My thumbpads felt too big. I made too many mistakes. Progress was slow and difficult, so I always switched back to the one finger method at which I had become quite proficient.

So why did I force myself to learn two thumb iPhone typing? The reason is kind of embarrassing. My wife, Rachel, has had an iPhone for quite a while, an is what I’d consider a more “normal” user than I am (e.g. she doesn’t freak out if she’s more than a few feet away from her iPhone). One day, I noticed her typing with two thumbs. I had taught her according to the precepts of Steve – start out with one finger, two thumbs at first is too frustrating. But where I had stagnated in One Finger Village, Rachel had moved, all on her own, into Two Thumb City.

When I thought about it, there was no reason other than inertia and laziness on my part that kept me from the two thumb method. So I made myself practice. A lot. I don’t quite feel completely proficient yet, and I make a LOT of mistakes still, but I definitely type faster than I did before.

So instead of limiting myself to short tweets and emails, longer portions of text (like this post) no longer seem so daunting, and I’ll likely continue to post more and longer stuff from my iPhone.

What about you? Do you still type with one finger on your iPhone? Or did you jump right in to the two finger method?
